A Beginning in the Storm

January 25, 2026

Dear Friend,

I’ve been thinking about starting a blog for a while now. I just needed the right beginning. Today, Mother Nature provided it—Winter Storm Fern. When I woke up this morning, the electricity was still on. Ten minutes later, it wasn’t. No problem, I thought. It’ll be back soon. It is now 7:00 p.m., and I’m writing this by candlelight.

Funny how a quiet house and a winter storm can make you think. Today, I found myself wondering—how are my fellow seniors doing right now? Are you sitting in the dark like me? Are you warm? Are you alone… or wishing you weren’t?

There are so many ways life can look at this stage—married, widowed, divorced, or single. And each path brings its own challenges, even on the best of days, money, health, and family. Decisions we never thought we’d have to make. I am one of the fortunate ones. I have a daughter who checks on me. Not everyone does.

And that got me thinking… we don’t talk enough about what this stage of life is really like. So, I’ve decided to start. In the weeks ahead, I’ll be writing about the things that matter to us—housing, health care, staying active, working in retirement, income, and how to stay safe in this ever-changing digital world. But not just the serious things—we’ll also talk about fun things, learning something new, and ways to make life a little easier (and maybe a little more fun).

There’s one rule, though: no politics. We have enough of that elsewhere. What we will have is honesty, a little humor, and conversations that feel like they belong to us.

Because no matter our differences, we are all navigating something similar—and none of us should have to do it alone.

Next time, I’ll share one of the biggest surprises I’ve discovered about being a senior… and it’s probably not what you think.

Until then, stay warm, stay safe, and check on someone if you can. Come back soon—we’re just getting started.

Be well,

Emma
