The Biggest Surprise About Being a Senior

April 13, 2026

Dear Friend,

In my first post I shared how a winter storm gave me the unexpected beginning for this blog and I said I would share my biggest surprise about being a senior. When I was younger, I had a very clear picture of what being a “senior” would look like. I thought life would slow down. I thought most of the big decisions would be behind me. I assumed things would feel… settled. What I did not expect was how many new decisions would still be waiting. That has been the biggest surprise.

No one really tells you how many choices continue to appear at this stage of life. Important ones. Sometimes overwhelming ones. Often unexpected ones.

Where should I live?

Should I downsize?

Do I want to keep driving?

Is it time to simplify things?

Should I keep working—or do something completely different?

And those are just the practical decisions. There are emotional ones, too.

How do I stay connected?

How do I make new friends?

How do I ask for help when I’ve spent a lifetime being the one others relied on?

These aren’t small questions. And they don’t come with easy answers. What surprised me most is that growing older doesn’t mean life stops changing. In many ways, it means learning how to adapt all over again. The difference is that now we carry decades of experience, wisdom, and memories with us. That should make things easier… and sometimes it does. But it can also make change feel heavier, because we understand just how much life can shift. The good news? We’re not alone in this.

Every day, millions of people are navigating the same questions, the same uncertainties, and the same quiet moments of wondering “Am I doing this right?” That’s one of the reasons I started this blog. These conversations matter. Sharing experiences matters. Knowing someone else understands matters.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll talk about many of these decisions—big and small—and how we can approach them with confidence and a little less worry. Because while this stage of life may be full of surprises, it can also be full of growth, connection, and even new beginnings.

Until next time, stay well, stay safe, and check on someone if you can.

Be well,

Emma
