Escape the Noise

Escape the Noise

Pull up a chair and sit awhile

September  2026

Dear Friend:

I was vacuuming my apartment the other day when a thought occurred to me. There is a lot of noise in our lives.

Just look at the technology we use today. Websites are covered with advertisements and pop-ups. Our phones are constantly sending us alerts. Even at work, our computers are constantly popping up with alerts, and some of our programs seem to be constantly opening one window or another.

Along with all the personal technology, there is news available 24 hours a day. And it is not just news. There are constant opinions, arguments, and headlines designed to make us stop and look. Everyone seemingly trying to convince us that this is the thing we need to pay attention to.

No wonder we sometimes have the feeling of being bombarded with information.

I am old enough to remember a time when, if you wanted to watch the news, you had to watch in the morning, at noon, or in the evening. There was also the morning and evening newspaper. Even radio stations would generally report the news at the top of the hour.

Of course, if there was something monumental happening, normal programming would be suspended to tell you what you needed to know.

I am not trying to organize a boycott of technology or the news. Having access to technology and information can be very important. Think about 9/11 or the pandemic. Constant access to news and technology was important during those times.

Sometimes, though, I think we are simply tired of all the noise and the exhaustion that comes with it.

How nice it is to find a quiet place.

Maybe we don't always need to know everything that is happening every minute.

How different life feels when you step away from all of that.

Perhaps that is one reason I created Sharing with Seniors. I wanted a little corner of the internet where you could simply sit for a while.

No shouting.
No arguing.
No breaking news.
No pop-ups competing for your attention.

Just stories, memories, and a place to slow down for a few minutes.

That's part of what I wanted Sharing with Seniors to be—a quiet place to step away from the noise for a few minutes.

Until next time, stay well, stay safe, and stay connected to those you love.

Be well,

Emma
